Counselor in Training

Members between the ages of 14 and 18 have the opportunity to participate in a voluntary employment training program. Interested members complete an employment application and meet with the appropriate supervisor for an interview and overview of the position before selection is made.

They are assigned to a supervisor during their length of service, a schedule of hours is established and a job description provided. Counselors in Training must maintain their Club membership for the entire length of their service in this position and have parent/guardian permission.

The schedule for each Counselor in Training, including days of the week and number of hours per week, will conform to the employment laws for the State of New York, but will vary based on each individual’s interests and availability.

The assigned supervisor will hold meetings on a periodic basis, or as needed, to mentor, support and guide the individual to be successful in their position.

A personnel and supervision file will be established for each participant and maintained in the same manner as employee files. The supervisor maintains records and reports pertinent to services rendered by their assigned Counselor in Training and can act as a reference for future employment or college application.

Youth of the Year

The Youth of the Year program is a full year of individual and group programs culminating with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America’s Youth of the Year Awards, which encourages 14 to 18 year old members to exhibit leadership qualities in all aspects of their lives including home and family, moral character, community, school, the Club, life goals, overcoming obstacles, poise and public speaking. Members have the opportunity to be recognized on the local, regional and national levels and earn college scholarships.

To apply for Youth of the Year, an individual must have been a member in good standing for at least three consecutive years, be at least 14 years old, college bound, and have submitted a complete application. A selection committee chooses one individual each year as the Club’s Youth of the Year.
