Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle 2019 Youth of the Year, Jesus Torres, takes 2nd Place at New York State Competition

Jesus Torres is a 16-year-old student at New Rochelle High School currently completing his 11thgrade year. Jesus is a member of Model Congress at NRHS, Chorale and was on the NRHS Rugby Team.

He has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle for 4 years. Jesus was one of the inaugural members of the relaunch of the Mascaro Teen Program. With the relaunch we started a new charter for the teen program, Keystone where he was fortunate to be elected Co-President of Keystone. As one of the new teens at Mascaro he was able to be the first to participate in various national programs such as Career Launch, Keystone, Money Matters, and local programs such as Law Club.

As a member of Law Club, which is a Club run by the New Rochelle Bar Association for Boys & Girls Club members, Jesus has been able to find a passion for Law. He has been able to attend several events to further that interest including a dinner with Westchester County District Attorney, Anthony Scarpino and the New York State Superior Judges Dinner, where he met the Chief Justice.

Jesus was also invited to the New York State Democratic Convention last May. He received the opportunity after being interviewed and asked questions about how gun violence affected him for a commercial for Governor Andrew Cuomo’s reelection campaign. He was able to stand on stage and witness so many great speakers including Vice President Joe Biden.

Jesus was selected as the 2019 Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle Youth of the Year by a panel of judges. Youth of the Year has been Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club members. A Youth of the Year candidate embodies Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s three priority outcome areas of leadership, character and service; academic excellence; and healthy lifestyles. Being named a Youth of the Year is the highest honor bestowed upon Club and Youth Center members.

On May 19thJesus was named the runner up, 2ndplace, for the New York State Youth of the Year Competition, receiving a $2,000 college scholarship.
